Spiritual Counselor

Marybeth Redmond

It was St. Catherine of Genoa who said, My deepest me is God. My work as a spiritual counselor (or director) is to help a seeker connect with that deepest reservoir of God that resides within them. And to discern its holy movement in their outer lives.

I practice embodied listening with my whole being attuned to a person’s sacred story. I am listening for hints and clues that suggest Divine movement and posing sensitive, insightful questions to help a seeker access more of their own inner knowing. Once excavated, that wisdom and guidance may be put into action according to a person’s unique longings and gifts.

Sometimes connection to one’s inner Mystery is blocked by accumulated guilt, shame, or traumatic histories. Through compassionate listening, silence & stillness, embodied exercises, guided meditation, and the creation of a safe, inclusive, confidential space, I strive to create the conditions for seekers to access and then actualize their deepest hearts.

A growing number of us are called to live as everyday mystics in the world, as theologian Howard Thurman encouraged! How about you?

“Marybeth helped me reconnect with my spiritual life. Through meaningful conversations, reflective exercises, and spiritual practices, she helped me gain clarity about how to align my actions with my spiritual values.”

“Most important of all, do everything you can to nurture your spiritual intelligence. It is your only genuine source of hope, direction, meaning, and comfort.”

— Cynthia Bourgeault

“If we could discover this great mystery of God in us, we would be truly free, and out of this freedom the seeds of our lives would sprout into a new world of justice and peace.”

— Ilia Delio

My Background

Marybeth is an interfaith/interspiritual minister ordained through One Spirit Seminary in New York City. She received her certification in spiritual direction through the Spiritual Guidance Training Institute and is a member of Spiritual Directors International (SDI).

She is a commissioned presenter of Centering Prayer through
Contemplative Outreach, the organization founded by Trappist monk Fr. Thomas Keating. Marybeth currently serves as the director of community experience for Closer Than Breath, a global online contemplative community rooted in the mystical Christian contemplative tradition.

She has been a practitioner of Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, yoga, and the Christian contemplative wisdom path for many years. Marybeth’s Catholic formation, along with her deep study of the Christian mystics, led her to embrace interspirituality as an emerging path for seekers with diverse and multiple religious or spiritual backgrounds, as well as the spiritually independent.

Marybeth is a longtime journalist with a master’s in journalism. She has used her communications skills in the nonprofit arena to advocate for vulnerable communities in Vermont, including refugees, New Americans, the incarcerated, women in poverty, and those affected by the pandemic. Most recently, she served as an elected representative in the Vermont State Legislature (2019-2022) where she participated in policymaking on the House Human Services Committee, as well as Assistant Majority Leader to the Speaker.

In 2013, she co-edited the book,
Hear Me, See Me: Incarcerated Women Write (Orbis Books), an anthology of the poetry and prose of Vermont’s incarcerated women as part of their participation in the writinginside program which she co-founded. Marybeth lives in Essex, Vermont with her husband, son, and energetic labradoodle Nanuk.
